Ultra portable drilling technologies raise the possibility of exploring areas long inaccessible to traditional drilling rigs: indoor locations, and basements, alleyways, parking garages and locations where low ceilings or overhead piping may provide as little as two metres of clearance.

These drilling methods feature machines that range in size from large hand drills weighing a few kilograms, to oversized jackhammers, to wheel mounted auger rigs that weigh a few hundred kilograms to track mounted machines capable of reaching very tight spaces.
